Bernard of Cluny

(twelfth century)
   Poet and Polemicist.
Little is known of his life except that he was a monk at the influential Benedictine house at Cluny. He is remembered as the author of a magnificent satirical poem entitled De Contemptu Mundi. In it he mocked the monastic corruption of his time and contrasted the short-lived pleasures of this life with the joys of the world to come. Several well-known hymns, such as ‘Jerusalem the golden’ and ‘Brief life is here our portion’, are based on verses from the poem.
